Culturing“ How pearls are made ”

Culturing

A farm is where beautiful pearls originate from.
Otsuki Pearl strives to produce better quality pearls by dealing with ever-changing natural conditions.

Natural pearls are formed when a foreign object such as sand (instead of a nucleus)
accidentally enters an oyster between its shell and mantle.
However, most natural pearls are small and irregularly shaped, so they are very rare.

The only difference between natural pearls and cultured pearls is that the former is produced when a foreign object accidentally enters an oyster’s shell while the latter is produced when nucleus is artificially placed in the oyster’s shell.
There is no structural difference in the layers of nacre the oyster coats the foreign object with, and both are beautiful jewels produced by the natural forces of the sea and the oyster.

Raising oysters

The mother oysters used to produce pearls are crossbred with Akoya oysters and bred artificially (hatchery “breeding”) to grow young oysters.
There are two methods of producing young oysters: natural breeding, in which oysters naturally cling to cedar leaves and other matter in the sea, and artificial breeding, in which the oysters are artificially fertilized and grown. Currently, artificial breeding is the main method of raising young oysters because it is better able to ensure the right amount of oysters and it provides superior pearl oysters.

Nucleus insertion

A piece of mantle tissue from a donor oyster and a nucleus needed to produce a pearl are placed in an oyster between its shell and mantle. This is a process that requires a keen eye to gauge the condition of the oyster and precise technical skills to insert the nucleus.

Producing pearls

After nucleus insertion is complete, the oysters are returned to the sea and grown so that the pearl will grow inside in the oyster’s shell.

Harvest

In the winter, pearls are harvested from oysters. This is the time of year when the water temperature drops and the pearls are at their most beautiful. The seasonal changes unique to Japan are an important factor in the production of quality pearls. Harvest, which is the moment when beautiful pearls are created, is the culmination of the cultivation process.
